The mascots want families to come to their free sports party in Paddington this Sunday 31 July. Children, and adults, will be able to try out exciting events such as basketball, table tennis, weightlifting, football and cricket. Young people who take part in all ten events will even win a medal and be invited to climb up onto the podium to receive it from Wenlock and Mandeville. One year ahead of the London 2012 Games, Paralympic athletes Paul Karabardak and Ali Jawad will be handing out tips on weightlifting and table tennis and Queens Park Rangers and the London Pioneers basketball team will all be on hand to encourage young people to take up sport.
The event will run all day Sunday, from 11am to 5pm, on London Street and in Norfolk Square Paddington – close to the 2012 Games venues in Hyde Park, and where many of the visitors and athletes will be arriving in London next year on the Heathrow Express. It has been organised by Paddington Business Improvement District.
Kay Buxton, Chief Executive of Paddington BID, said “This is a fantastic, free, event that will allow people of all ages to try out new sports. Paddington is both a key arrival point and accommodation area for the Games, and inviting Wenlock and Mandeville here is a great way to kickstart what’s going to be a fantastic year for local people.”
Paul Charalambous, Chairman of Paddington BID, said “Once again Paddington BID welcomes families to Paddington to enjoy our annual summer event. This year we focus on celebrating sport and increasing participation in the run up to the London 2012 Games.”
